Ferndale, WA – Ferndale businessman and all around swell guy TJ has an axe to grind. Not only an axe to grind, but an axe to throw. “We like to throw axes at walls and other things in Ferndale. It’s what we do.”

TJ came up with the idea after accidentally throwing an axe at a Bigfoot while camping last summer. “We were camping up at Baker Lake and one evening a Bigfoot walked into camp. At first I thought it was just another camper trying to steal my s’mores, so I threw an axe at him as I usually do. But I quickly realized it was a friendly Bigfoot,” said TJ. “Luckily I missed him and it only punctured the gas tank. Axes are sharp, you know.”
After that event TJ came up with an idea. “At first I wasn’t too sure about a bunch of people throwing axes in a confined space. So we initially came up with ‘Ferndale Sock Throwing’. It seemed safer and everybody knows how to throw socks. But it was kind of boring,” said TJ. “So I went back to the throwing axes idea. And since Bigfoot was part of that idea, I came up with Bigfoot Axe Throwing and the business was born.”
TJ says they have lots of axes to throw at targets on walls. “We have axes for everyone. Guys seem to like the ones with a picture of Bob Ross on them for some reason. The ladies like pink ones that smell like essential oils. The kids love to throw axes that have Spongebob Squarepants, which is appropriate because kids under 12 can only throw square axes made of sponges,” said TJ.
One thing TJ says they’re not doing anymore is the Friday Night Blow Up. “Every Friday the person with the most points had a chance to throw an axe at a box of dynamite just like in the olden’ days. Loggers used to do that to blow off steam. But after the first event when we blew up half the building, including the next door business, we figured it wasn’t such a great idea any longer,” said TJ. “So now we just throw axes at balls that look like the coronavirus.”
“The only thing we ask is people wear flannel shirts with suspenders and logging boots to keep it authentic like axe throwing in the good ol’ days,” said TJ.
